Osteoporosis treatment in Fresno, CA
Osteoporosis is silent until a bone breaks, so the evaluation is about finding risk before that happens. We review your DEXA bone density scan and calculate your ten-year fracture risk, and we look for the causes of bone loss that are often missed: vitamin D deficiency, hyperparathyroidism, thyroid over-replacement, low testosterone or estrogen, celiac disease and medications such as steroids. Treating a cause is often the most important step.

Treatment is matched to your fracture risk. For many people that starts with calcium, vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise and fall prevention. For higher risk we use the medications with the strongest evidence: oral and intravenous bisphosphonates, denosumab injections every six months, and bone-building therapies such as teriparatide, abaloparatide and romosozumab for the highest-risk patients. We explain how long to stay on each one and when to take a break.

Bone treatment works slowly, so follow-up matters. We repeat bone density on the right schedule, monitor calcium and vitamin D, check that medication is being tolerated, and adjust the plan as you age or your health changes. The goal is simple and measurable: fewer fractures, more independence, and a plan you understand and can stick with.

Both describe lower than normal bone density on a DEXA scan. Osteopenia is the milder range and osteoporosis is more severe. Treatment decisions depend on your overall fracture risk, not the label alone, which is why we calculate that risk for every patient.
Not everyone does. If your fracture risk is low, calcium, vitamin D, exercise and fall prevention may be enough. If your risk is high, medication substantially reduces the chance of a hip or spine fracture, and we explain the options and their side effects honestly.
Those side effects are real but very rare, and for people at high fracture risk the benefit far outweighs them. We screen for risk factors, coordinate with your dentist when needed and plan treatment breaks appropriately.
Yes. About one in four men over 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis, and men are less likely to be tested. Low testosterone, steroids and certain medical conditions raise the risk.
Usually every one to two years while on treatment or while being watched, depending on your results and risk. We schedule it for you and compare each scan with the last one on the same machine when possible.
