Mariposa County has a small hospital and primary care clinic but no endocrinologist, so diabetes, thyroid and hormone patients choose between Merced, Modesto and Fresno. A proper osteoporosis evaluation looks for a cause. Vitamin D deficiency, hyperparathyroidism, thyroid over-replacement, low testosterone or estrogen, celiac disease and steroid medications all weaken bone, and treating the cause is often the most important step.
About Osteoporosis Treatment

Both mean lower than normal bone density on a DEXA scan; osteopenia is milder. Treatment depends on your overall fracture risk, not the label alone, which is why we calculate that risk for every patient.
Not everyone does. If your fracture risk is low, calcium, vitamin D, exercise and fall prevention may be enough. If it is high, medication substantially lowers the chance of a hip or spine fracture.
The jaw and femur side effects are real but very rare, and for people at high fracture risk the benefit far outweighs them. We screen for risk factors, coordinate with your dentist when needed and plan treatment breaks.
