Prediabetes definition: What is prediabetes?
Prediabetes is a condition that affects many people who don't know they have it — but it can be detected through simple blood tests done by your doctor or health care provider. Prediabetes may be a stepping stone to type 2 diabetes if not treated early on with diet and exercise changes as well as medication when necessary.
Over time, people with prediabetes can develop serious health problems, including cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Type 2 diabetes is more common and usually occurs in middle-aged people or older. People who are overweight are more likely to develop prediabetes — and be at risk for developing full-blown diabetes — than those who have normal weight.
If you're diagnosed with prediabetes, your doctor will recommend lifestyle changes such as losing weight and exercising more to help lower your blood sugar levels back to normal range.
