Hey there! Colby here from Spring Endocrinology. I get asked this question a lot: "What are the tips for weight management during holiday season?"

As we approach Thanksgiving, the holiday season is just around the corner. Holidays are a time for friends and family to get together to celebrate and enjoy each other's company. Unfortunately, we tend to overeat during this time of year because of all of the delicious food that is available. You want to look your best for all the parties and gatherings. You can do so by keeping a few things in mind.

Don't overdo it: It's important to know how much calorie intake you can afford during the holidays. Don't overeat because it will lead to weight gain. Plan ahead to avoid overindulging. You don’t have to skip out on parties and holiday get-togethers – just plan ahead so you can enjoy yourself without overdoing it on food and drinks. Take a few minutes before going to an event to plan your day, including what you will eat before leaving the house, how much alcohol you plan to drink (if any), and how much dessert will be offered at each event. If there is something you really want at an event but know that it isn’t good for your diet, consider taking a smaller portion or passing altogether.

Eat smart: Instead of eating anything that is available, have a balanced meal that includes grains, fruits and vegetables and protein. Try not to have too many rich foods like gravy, mayonnaise or cream sauces, and limit yourself to one serving per meal or snack time so that they don't take a toll on your waistline. Eat smaller portions. Instead of eating three large plates of food at once, try eating two small plates instead. This will help you feel full without eating too much food.

Keep yourself hydrated: Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water. Drink water instead of soda or alcohol! Soda and alcohol have no nutritional value and can cause bloating and weight gain over time if consumed too often. Drinking lots of water throughout the day helps keep you hydrated without adding extra calories into your diet!

Exercise regularly: Exercise daily if possible and avoid sedentary activities like sitting in front of the television or computer for long hours.

Take care of stress: Stress can lead to weight gain as it affects our metabolism and appetite hormones. Therefore try some relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation to stay calm throughout the holidays.
